Taiwan under Japanese rule

Following the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895, Taiwan became the first overseas colony of the Empire of Japan. The administration focused on economic modernization, infrastructure development, and cultural assimilation until the end of World War II. Sovereignty was formally renounced in 1952.
