Union of Burma

The Union of Burma served as the official name of the sovereign state of Myanmar following its independence from the United Kingdom in 1948. It maintained a democratic government until the 1962 coup d'état established a military-led Revolutionary Council. The state was characterized by its initial non-aligned stance in international affairs.
