Summary
The United Arab Republic was a sovereign state formed by the political union of Egypt and Syria between 1958 and 1961. Following the Syrian secession in 1961, Egypt retained the name until the republic was formally dissolved in 1971. It was led by President Gamal Abdel Nasser.
