Summary
The Zengid dynasty was a Turkoman Sunni Muslim dynasty founded in 1127 as an Atabegate of the Seljuk Empire. It controlled territories in the Levant and Upper Mesopotamia, even briefly holding Egypt under Saladin. The dynasty gained prominence through conflicts with the Crusaders and persisted after the Seljuk decline.
