Summary
Kumamoto Prefecture is located on the island of Kyushu, bordering Fukuoka, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima prefectures. Historically known as Higo Province, it was renamed Kumamoto during the Meiji Restoration. The prefecture is home to Mount Aso, one of the largest active volcanoes globally.
