New South Wales is the most populous state in Australia, located on the country's east coast with Sydney serving as its capital. Established as a British penal colony in 1788, it originally encompassed a much larger portion of the Australian continent. The state is home to diverse landscapes ranging from coastal regions to the Great Dividing Range.
