Summary
Pas-de-Calais is a French department in northern Hauts-de-France, bordering the English Channel and the North Sea. It originated in 1790 from the former provinces of Calaisis, Boulonnais, Ponthieu and Artois. The area saw major WWI battles, including Vimy Ridge, and was a focal point of WWII deception Operation Fortitude.
