Summary
Passau district is a Landkreis in southeastern Bavaria, Germany, surrounding the city of Passau on three sides. Established in 1971 by merging the former districts of Wegscheid, Vilshofen, Griesbach (Rottal) and parts of Pfarrkirchen and Eggenfelden, it spans the Bavarian Forest and Danube lowlands. The coat of arms combines Bavaria’s blue‑white checkered pattern with a red wolf representing the former Hochstift Passau and a red panther for the Wittelsbach family.
