Salento is a cultural and geographic region located at the southern end of Apulia, in Italy, often referred to as the "heel" of the Italian peninsula. Historically, it was known as Sallentina or Messapia, and later as Calabria during the Roman and Byzantine eras. The region flourished under Roman rule with agriculture, particularly wheat and olive oil production.
