Summary
Samar is the third-largest island in the Philippines, situated in the Eastern Visayas region. First sighted by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, it was initially known as Zamal and later governed under Cebu during Spanish colonization. The island experienced significant conflict during the Philippine-American War, notably the Balangiga massacre, and continues to face challenges from ongoing rebellions.
