Summary
Tahuata is the smallest inhabited island of the Marquesas archipelago within the French overseas territory of French Polynesia. It was first sighted by Europeans during the Spanish expedition of Álvaro de Mendaña in 1595. The island became a French possession in 1842 after Chief Iotete signed a sovereignty declaration.
