La Guaira State, formerly Vargas State, is located in northern Venezuela, bordering Aragua, Miranda, and the Caribbean Sea. It contains Venezuela's largest seaport and airport, with La Guaira as its capital. The region experienced devastating floods and landslides in 1999, known as the Vargas tragedy.
