Zarcero Canton is situated in the Cordillera Central mountain range, northwest of Alajuela. It borders San Carlos to the north, Naranjo to the south, Sarchí to the east, and San Ramón to the west. The canton was formerly known as Alfaro Ruiz until 2010.
