About Saint Barthélemy
Saint Barthélemy's history is marked by periods of French, British, and Swedish rule. Originally inhabited by indigenous peoples, the island was claimed by Christopher Columbus in 1493. For much of the 17th and 18th centuries, it was a coveted trading post due to its strategic location. The island experienced significant economic growth during its time as a free port, attracting merchants from around the world. In 2007, Saint Barthélemy became a separate overseas collectivity of France, gaining increased autonomy.
