About Montserrat

Montserrat's history is deeply intertwined with colonization, initially by Ireland and later by Great Britain. The island was named by Christopher Columbus after the monastery in Catalonia, Spain. For centuries, Montserrat thrived as a sugar-producing colony, relying heavily on enslaved African labor. The 20th century saw a shift towards tourism and financial services, but this progress was dramatically interrupted by volcanic activity. Today, Montserrat continues to rebuild and adapt in the face of ongoing geological challenges.
