About Burundi
Burundi's history is deeply rooted in the interactions of the Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa peoples, who have inhabited the region for centuries. For a significant period, Burundi existed as an independent kingdom, developing unique political and social structures. The late 19th century brought German colonization as part of German East Africa, fundamentally altering the region's trajectory. Following World War I, the territory was mandated to Belgium under the League of Nations, forming Rwanda-Urundi. Burundi achieved independence in 1962, but its post-colonial period has been marked by political instability and ethnic conflict.
