Originally inhabited by Kalinago people, it was claimed by Spain in the 15th century before becoming an English colony in 1625. The island's economy historically relied heavily on sugar production, utilizing enslaved African labor. Today, tourism and financial services are major contributors to the Barbadian economy. Barbados gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1966 and transitioned to a parliamentary republic in 2021.
