Basic Information
About Estonia
Estonia's history is marked by centuries of foreign rule, beginning with the Northern Crusades in the 13th century. The territory was subsequently controlled by Denmark, the Teutonic Order, Poland, and Sweden, each leaving a lasting impact on its culture and society. A strong Estonian national identity began to emerge during the Age of Awakening in the mid-19th century, fueled by a growing sense of cultural and linguistic distinctiveness. Estonia declared its independence in 1918 following the collapse of the Russian Empire, but this freedom was short-lived due to World War II and subsequent Soviet occupation. The country regained its independence in 1991 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and has since embraced democracy and integration with Western Europe.
