About Marshall Islands
The Marshall Islands boast a rich history rooted in Polynesian seafaring and settlement, dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. European contact began in the late 18th century with Captain John Marshall's visit, leading to the islands being named in his honor. The islands were subsequently claimed by Spain before becoming a German protectorate in the late 19th century. Following World War I, they fell under Japanese control and then became a US-administered Trust Territory after World War II. The Marshall Islands achieved independence in 1986 under a Compact of Free Association with the United States, maintaining a close relationship.
