About Palau

Palau's history is deeply rooted in its maritime connections with Southeast Asia, with initial settlements occurring around 1000 BCE. The islands were first noted on European maps through accounts from Palauans shipwrecked near the Philippines in the 17th century. Spanish claims were made in the 16th century, followed by British assertions, but Palau remained largely independent until the late 19th century. The islands became part of the German Empire before being transferred to Japan after World War I. Palau gained independence in 1994, establishing a unique political relationship with the United States.
