About Seychelles

The Seychelles islands remained largely uninhabited for centuries, known only to Arab and Swahili sailors navigating the Indian Ocean. European awareness of the archipelago began in the 16th century, though formal colonization didn't occur until the 18th century with French claims. France established a colony, relying heavily on enslaved African labor to develop the islands' resources. British forces eventually seized control during the Napoleonic Wars, establishing a new colonial administration. Seychelles ultimately achieved independence in 1976, becoming a sovereign republic.
