About Tonga
Tonga's history is deeply rooted in Polynesian seafaring traditions, with its first inhabitants arriving around 2,500 years ago as part of the Lapita culture. The islands quickly became a significant power in the South Pacific, establishing the Tuʻi Tonga Empire through expansion and colonization. Over centuries, a distinct Tongan identity, language, and culture developed, setting it apart from other Polynesian societies. European contact began in the 17th century, with explorers like Abel Tasman and Captain James Cook making notable visits. In the 19th century, Tonga navigated a path towards unification and, eventually, a protected state under British influence, maintaining its sovereignty.
