About Vanuatu
Vanuatu's history is rooted in the traditions of its Melanesian inhabitants, who have inhabited the islands for millennia. The archipelago first encountered European explorers in 1606 with the arrival of Pedro Fernandes de Queirós, who claimed the islands for Spain. In the 19th century, both France and the United Kingdom asserted claims over different parts of the archipelago, leading to a complex period of colonial influence. This dual claim culminated in the establishment of the New Hebrides, a unique Anglo-French condominium that lasted until 1980. Vanuatu finally achieved independence in 1980, adopting a parliamentary republic system of government.
