Herten is a town in the Recklinghausen district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located in the industrial Ruhr area. Historically it was the seat of the governors of the County of Vest Recklinghausen within the Archbishopric of Cologne, first mentioned in 1050. The town developed into a mining community after coal mines were founded in the late 19th century.
