Madrid serves as the capital and most populous city of Spain, situated on the River Manzanares. Originally a military outpost under the Emirate of Córdoba in the 9th century, it became a significant town within the Crown of Castile during the Late Middle Ages. Madrid's development was spurred by becoming the permanent seat of the Hispanic Monarchy's court in 1561.
