Quetzaltenango, also known as Xelajú or Xela, is a municipality in western Guatemala, situated in a mountain valley. Historically, it was a city of the Mam Mayans and later part of the K'iche' Kingdom. It briefly served as the capital of the state of Los Altos in the 19th century.
