Summary

Vaasa, located on the Gulf of Bothnia, was granted city rights in 1606 by Charles IX of Sweden and named after the House of Vasa. During the Finnish Civil War in 1918, it briefly served as the capital of White Finland. Today, it's a bilingual city and a significant cultural center for Swedish-Finns.
