Zimbabwe's history is deeply rooted in ancient civilizations, with the Shona people establishing Great Zimbabwe, a significant trading hub, in the 11th century. The Kingdom of Zimbabwe flourished, followed by the Mutapa and Rozvi empires, showcasing a rich cultural and political heritage. European influence began with the arrival of Cecil Rhodes' British South Africa Company in the late 19th century, leading to colonial rule and the establishment of Southern Rhodesia. The struggle for independence intensified in the mid-20th century, culminating in the Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1965 and a protracted bush war. Zimbabwe finally achieved independence in 1980, initially under the leadership of Robert Mugabe, marking a new era for the nation.
