Summary

Uganda gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1962 while retaining Elizabeth II as the nominal head of state. The country functioned as a Commonwealth realm until the monarchy was abolished in 1963. Following this transition, the Kabaka of Buganda, Edward Mutesa II, became the first President.
