Summary
The Lordship of Ireland existed from 1177 to 1542, established after the Anglo-Norman invasion. It was a papal fief granted to the English Plantagenet kings, represented locally by a Justiciar or Lord Deputy. English rule never encompassed the entire island, with Gaelic kingdoms maintaining control over much of Ireland.
