Maratha Empire

The Maratha Empire emerged in the 17th century as a challenge to the Mughal Empire and Bijapur Sultanate, founded by Shivaji. It expanded significantly under Peshwa Bajirao I, becoming a dominant force in the Indian subcontinent. Ultimately, the confederacy dissolved after conflicts with the British East India Company in the early 19th century.
