Summary
The Moldavian SSR was one of the fifteen constituent republics of the Soviet Union, existing from 1940 until its dissolution in 1991. It was established following the Soviet annexation of Bessarabia from Romania under the terms of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The republic served as the direct predecessor to the modern independent state of Moldova.
