Summary
Oldenburg was a sovereign state in northwestern Germany that evolved from a medieval county into a grand duchy. It was ruled by the House of Oldenburg, which also provided monarchs for Denmark, and remained a member state of the German Reich until 1946. Its territory included various exclaves and the Oldenburg Münsterland.
