Portuguese São Tomé and Príncipe was a colony established after its discovery in 1470, becoming a key part of the Portuguese Empire. The islands were initially uninhabited and later utilized for sugar cane cultivation with slave labor. It gained independence from Portugal in 1975, ending centuries of colonial rule.
