Summary

Portuguese Timor was a Portuguese colony established in 1702 on the island of Timor, sharing the territory with the Dutch East Indies. The Portuguese initially arrived in 1515, attracted by the island's sandalwood trade, and established a Dominican presence in Lifau in 1556. Despite achieving independence in 2002, the territory faced Indonesian invasion in 1975, which was not internationally recognized.
