Summary
The State of Los Altos was a short-lived entity within the Federal Republic of Central America and an independent republic. Established in 1838, it encompassed western Guatemala and the Soconusco region of Chiapas, Mexico, with Quetzaltenango as its capital. The state arose from political tensions between Quetzaltenango and Guatemala City, ultimately dissolving in 1849.
