About territory
Western Sahara is a disputed territory in North-Western Africa, recognized by the United Nations as a non-self-governing territory. It was formerly Spanish Sahara until 1975, when Spain withdrew, leading to conflict with Morocco and the Polisario Front. The territory is largely desert, making it the most sparsely populated in Africa, with a population of approximately 597,000. The Polisario Front proclaimed the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, but its sovereignty is not universally recognized. The ongoing dispute over Western Sahara continues to be a significant geopolitical issue in the region.
