About territory
Guernsey is the second-largest island in the Channel Islands, situated close to the coast of Normandy, France. Historically part of the Duchy of Normandy, it remained loyal to the English crown in 1204, diverging from mainland Normandy. During World War II, the island was occupied by Nazi Germany for five years, finally being liberated on May 9, 1945, a date now celebrated annually. Guernsey functions as a self-governing dependency of the British Crown, possessing its own legal and administrative systems. The island's economy is diversified, with finance, tourism, and agriculture playing significant roles.
