About territory

Guadeloupe is an overseas department and region of the French Republic, situated in the Caribbean. The archipelago consists of six inhabited islands, including Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, and numerous smaller islands and islets. Originally inhabited by Arawak and Carib peoples, the islands were claimed by Christopher Columbus in 1493 for Spain, later becoming a French colony. Today, Guadeloupe benefits from being an integral part of France and the European Union, with the Euro as its official currency. Its economy relies heavily on tourism and agriculture, particularly bananas and sugarcane.
