The Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown Dependency situated in the Irish Sea, between Great Britain and Ireland. Its history stretches back to before 6500 BC, with influences from Gaelic culture and Norse settlements. The island developed its own unique language, Manx, a branch of the Goidelic languages, and embraced Christianity through Irish missionaries. For centuries, the Isle of Man was a strategically important kingdom, ruled by various powers including the Norse and the Crovan dynasty. Today, it is known as an offshore financial centre and for the annual Isle of Man TT motorcycle race.
