About territory

Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean, part of the Leeward Islands. Nicknamed "The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean", it shares cultural ties with Ireland due to the ancestry of many inhabitants. The island experienced a significant population decline following the volcanic eruption of Soufrière Hills in 1995, which destroyed its capital, Plymouth. Despite ongoing volcanic activity, Montserrat is slowly rebuilding and relies on tourism and financial services. It is the only non-fully sovereign full member of the Caribbean Community and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.
