About New Caledonia
New Caledonia's history is deeply intertwined with both Melanesian and European influences. Originally inhabited by the Kanak people, the islands experienced limited contact with the outside world until the arrival of Captain James Cook in 1774. French colonization began in the mid-19th century, driven by strategic interests and economic opportunities, particularly nickel mining. The archipelago became a penal colony, receiving convicts from France for several decades. In recent decades, New Caledonia has navigated a complex path towards greater autonomy, with referendums held to determine its future political status.
