French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of France located in the South Pacific Ocean, comprised of 121 islands and atolls. Its history is marked by Polynesian settlement beginning around 200 BC, followed by French protectorate status in 1842 and eventual annexation in the 19th century. The islands are geographically dispersed over 2,000 kilometers, with the Society Islands being the most populated. Tourism and pearl farming are key components of the Polynesian economy, alongside reliance on French subsidies. As an overseas country and territory, it maintains an association with the European Union.
