About Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau's history is deeply intertwined with its coastal location and its role as a trading post for various empires. The region was initially part of the Kaabu kingdom and the Mali Empire, experiencing periods of both autonomy and external influence. Portuguese presence began in the 15th century, gradually establishing control over the territory, which became known as Portuguese Guinea. Independence was declared in 1973, following a protracted liberation war, and formally recognized in 1974, leading to the addition of the capital's name to distinguish it from neighboring Guinea. Since gaining independence, Guinea-Bissau has faced significant political instability, marked by coups and challenges to democratic governance.
