Moldova is a landlocked country situated in Eastern Europe, bordering Romania and Ukraine. Its history is deeply rooted in the Principality of Moldavia, which existed from the 14th century until its incorporation into the Russian Empire in 1812 as Bessarabia. The country experienced periods of Romanian rule and Soviet control before achieving independence in 1991. Moldova's economy is largely agrarian, with significant contributions from wine production and agriculture. Despite facing economic challenges, it continues to pursue closer ties with the European Union.
