Kingdom of Eswatini
Basic Information
About country
Eswatini is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, entirely surrounded by South Africa except for its eastern border with Mozambique. It is one of the smallest countries in Africa, boasting diverse climates and topography ranging from mountainous highveld to hot, dry lowveld. The Kingdom's history traces back to the mid-18th century with the establishment of the Swazi kingdom under Ngwane III, named after King Mswati II who expanded and unified the nation in the 19th century. After a period as a British high commission territory, Eswatini gained full independence in 1968, remaining a traditionally governed nation. Today, Eswatini faces socio-economic challenges, including a high HIV prevalence rate and significant poverty.
