Basic Information
About Algeria
Algeria's history is marked by a confluence of diverse cultures and empires, beginning with Phoenician settlements and subsequent rule by the Numidians and Romans. The region experienced periods of Vandal and Byzantine control before the arrival of Arab forces in the seventh century, initiating a long era of Islamic influence. Throughout the medieval period, Algeria was governed by a series of Arab and Berber dynasties, fostering a unique blend of traditions. The Ottoman Empire established a presence in the 16th century with the Regency of Algiers, which exerted considerable power in the Mediterranean. French colonization in the 19th century dramatically reshaped Algerian society, culminating in a brutal war of independence and eventual sovereignty in 1962.
