About Equatorial Guinea

Equatorial Guinea's history is deeply intertwined with Spanish colonialism, initially as a trading post and later as a full-fledged colony known as Spanish Guinea. The nation gained its independence in 1968, marking a significant shift in its political landscape and leading to the adoption of the name reflecting its equatorial location and connection to the Guinea region. Following independence, the country experienced a period of instability and authoritarian rule, significantly impacting its socio-political development. The discovery of substantial oil reserves in the 1990s dramatically altered the nation’s economy, though wealth distribution remains a major challenge. More recently, the country has undertaken efforts to modernize its infrastructure, including the construction of a new capital city, Ciudad de la Paz, intended to symbolize a new era of progress.
