About India
The Indus Valley Civilization, flourishing from 3300 to 1700 BCE, laid the foundations for Indian culture with its sophisticated urban planning and early writing system. The Vedic period saw the composition of the Vedas, foundational texts of Hinduism, shaping philosophical and religious thought for millennia. The Mauryan Empire, under Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, unified much of the subcontinent and promoted Buddhism as a state religion, leaving a lasting legacy of ethical governance. Centuries of regional kingdoms and empires, including the Guptas and Mughals, contributed to a rich tapestry of art, architecture, and scientific advancement. British colonial rule, beginning in the 18th century, profoundly altered India's political and economic landscape, ultimately leading to independence in 1947 and the formation of the modern Republic of India.
