About country
Togo is a country in West Africa, bordered by Ghana, Benin, and Burkina Faso. Historically, the coastal region served as a major hub for the transatlantic slave trade, earning it the name 'The Slave Coast'. Germany established a protectorate over the region in 1884, known as Togoland, which later became a French mandate after World War I. Togo gained independence from France in 1960, but experienced a period of single-party rule under President Gnassingbé Eyadéma following a military coup in 1967. Today, Togo's economy relies heavily on agriculture, with cocoa being a major export crop.
